How to fix a lotion pump that won't pump? Troubleshooting guide

Industry News-

Finding that your newly purchased cream or half-used lotion pump suddenly stops dispensing product can be quite frustrating. In most cases, the pump head isn't actually broken, but simply experiencing a minor issue.

● Common fixes for a non-dispensing lotion pump:

→ Check and unlock the pump head:

Many lotion pumps have a rotating locking mechanism to prevent leakage during travel or before first use.
Instructions: Hold the neck of the pump head (the ring at the bottle opening) and rotate it forcefully in the "Open" direction or counterclockwise. Sometimes you need to rotate it several times until the pump head suddenly pops up.

→ Eliminate air bubbles and gaps:

Sometimes the pump head won't dispense because there's a layer of air between the bottom of the straw and the liquid, preventing suction.
Instructions: The simplest solution is to "tap" the bottle. Tap the bottom of the bottle firmly on a table a few times to allow the cream to settle to the bottom. Or, turn the bottle upside down and shake it vigorously a few times to ensure the liquid is in contact with the pump mechanism.

→ Unclog a dried-up nozzle:

If the lotion hasn't been used for a long time, dried residue may be blocking the nozzle.
Instructions: Use a toothpick or paperclip to gently poke the small nozzle hole and remove any dried residue. Then try pressing the pump a few times.

→ Give it a hot water "bath":

Sometimes the internal spring or ball is stuck due to the viscous liquid.
Instructions: Unscrew the pump head and place the entire pump (including the long tube) in warm water for a few minutes. Repeatedly and quickly press the pump while it's submerged in the water, using the flow of the warm water to dislodge any internal blockages, until water flows smoothly from the tube.

→ Check for a loose straw:

If the straw isn't securely attached or is cracked, air can enter, resulting in insufficient suction.
Instructions: Check that the straw is firmly connected to the bottom of the pump head. If the straw is too long and is touching the bottom of the bottle, you can trim a small amount off at an angle to ensure the liquid can easily enter the tube.
